How to Become an RBT, Step by Step
Becoming a Registered Behavior Technician takes five steps: meet the basic eligibility requirements, complete a 40-hour training, pass the Initial Competency Assessment with a qualified assessor, apply to the BACB with a background check, and pass the exam at Pearson VUE. Most people finish the whole path in one to three months.
Step 1: Meet the basic requirements
You must be at least 18 years old, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and be able to pass a criminal background check. There is no degree requirement and no prior experience requirement, which is why the RBT credential is the most common entry point into the behavior analysis field.
Step 2: Complete the 40-hour training
The training covers the six Task List domains and must be completed over at least a 5-day period. Many ABA companies provide it free to new hires, and independent online providers sell it for roughly $30 to $100. A practical tip that saves months: apply to ABA companies first. Many hire trainees before certification, pay for the training and supervise the rest of the process, which converts the whole path into a paid onboarding.
Step 3: Pass the Initial Competency Assessment
A qualified assessor observes you demonstrating real skills: data collection, preference assessments, teaching procedures and behavior plan implementation, live or by role-play. This is a hands-on demonstration, not a written test, and it must be completed before your application. If you work for an ABA provider, your supervising BCBA typically administers it. Step 4: Apply to the BACB and schedule your exam
Create a BACB account, submit the application with your training certificate and signed competency assessment, pay the $50 application fee and complete the background check. Once approved, you schedule the exam through Pearson VUE and pay the $45 appointment fee. Appointments in busy areas can book out a couple of weeks, so schedule early.
Step 5: Pass the exam
The exam is 85 questions in 90 minutes, covered in detail on the exam structure page. Prepare with the study guide, drill the 85 question mock exam under timed conditions, and go in when your mock scores sit above 80 percent. After passing, your certification activates and maintenance begins: ongoing supervision, an annual renewal and the ethics code, described in the renewal guide.
Is the RBT path worth it?
As a career entry, yes for most people: it is one of the few healthcare-adjacent credentials reachable in weeks without a degree, demand from autism services remains strong across the US, and it is the standard first rung toward BCaBA and BCBA roles, compared in our career ladder guide. The work itself is demanding, physical and emotional at once, and the candidates who thrive are the ones who genuinely like working with kids on hard days, not just the ones who liked the psychology coursework.
