RBT Study Plan: Two Schedules That Work

BACB Task List 3rd Edition alignedLast updated August 2026Original questions with explanations

Both plans below use only free resources on this site and end the same way: full timed mock exams until you hold 80 percent or better. Pick the 2-week sprint if your 40-hour training is fresh, the 4-week schedule if it has been a while or you study best in smaller daily doses.

The 2-week sprint

Day 1Read the exam structure page, take the 15-question homepage sample cold, and note your two weakest domains from the result.
Day 2Study guide: Measurement section, then the Measurement quiz. Review every explanation, right or wrong.
Day 3Study guide: Assessment section, then the Assessment quiz. Run the Data Collection flashcards to close the day.
Day 4Study guide: Skill Acquisition (the big one), first half. Behavior Acquisition flashcards.
Day 5Skill Acquisition second half, then the Skill Acquisition quiz. This domain is a third of the exam; give it the full session.
Day 6Study guide: Behavior Reduction, then its quiz. Behavior Reduction flashcards.
Day 7Mock Exam A, 75 questions, timed, one sitting. Review every miss against the study guide the same day.
Day 8Rest or light review: glossary browsing and the Quick Review flashcard set only.
Day 9Study guide: Documentation, then its quiz. Documentation flashcards.
Day 10Study guide: Professional Conduct, then the Conduct quiz AND the Ethics scenarios quiz. Ethics flashcards.
Day 11Attack your two weakest domains from Day 7's breakdown: reread sections, retake quizzes.
Day 12Full Mock Exam A, 85 questions, 90 minutes, full simulation conditions. Same-day review of every miss.
Day 13Patch remaining weak spots. Quick Review flashcards. Read the exam day checklist and common mistakes pages.
Day 14Nothing new. One pass of Quick Review flashcards, confirm ID and appointment, sleep early.

The 4-week schedule

Week 1: Foundations

One domain every two days through Measurement, Assessment and half of Skill Acquisition. Each domain: study guide section, then its quiz, then matching flashcards. End the week with the homepage sample quiz to baseline yourself.

Week 2: The heavy domain

Finish Skill Acquisition thoroughly, then Behavior Reduction. Take the 75-question Mock A midweek as a checkpoint and log your domain breakdown. Daily: 15 minutes of flashcards on whatever set matches the day's study.

Week 3: Professional domains and second mock

Documentation, Professional Conduct and the Ethics scenarios quiz. Take 75-question Mock B at week's end and compare its domain breakdown against Mock A: your remaining weak spots are now precisely named.

Week 4: Simulation week

Early week: drill the two weakest domains and skim the glossary. Midweek: Full Mock A (85 questions) under complete exam conditions. Two days later: Full Mock B if you want a final confirmation, or targeted review if not. Last day before the exam: Quick Review flashcards only, logistics check, early night.

Are you ready? The honest checklist

All five boxes checked is what genuine readiness looks like. Four or fewer means one more focused week costs you nothing and a failed attempt costs $45 and a waiting period.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours a day should I study for the RBT exam?
60 to 90 focused minutes daily beats occasional marathons. The plans here assume about an hour a day, with mock exam days running longer.
Is 2 weeks enough to study for the RBT exam?
For most people who recently finished the 40-hour training, yes, with daily focused work. If the training was months ago or the material feels new, take the 4-week plan instead.
What if my mock scores are still below 80 percent at the end of the plan?
Push your exam date if you can rather than paying to test your luck. Repeat the final week's structure focusing only on your two weakest domains, then re-mock.
