RBT Renewal and Recertification Requirements

RBT certification renews annually. Each year you submit a renewal application with the $35 fee, complete a Renewal Competency Assessment with a qualified assessor, and confirm you have maintained supervision requirements and ethics compliance. There is no annual written exam and no CEU requirement.

The three renewal components

• Renewal Competency Assessment: a yearly re-verification of your core skills, observed and signed by a qualified assessor, usually your supervising BCBA. It mirrors the initial assessment in structure but moves faster because you now do these skills daily.
• Renewal application and fee: submitted through your BACB account before your certification date, with the $35 payment and updated attestations, including background-relevant self-reporting.
• Year-round obligations: supervision at required levels every supervisory period, and adherence to the ethics code. These are not checked only at renewal; falling out of supervision compliance mid-year is itself a certification problem.

The deadline is yours to track

The renewal date is tied to your certification date, not the calendar year, and tracking it is personally your responsibility even when an employer usually reminds you. Working a single billed session with an expired credential creates problems for you, your employer and the client's funding, which is a very expensive way to save a calendar reminder. Set two: one a month out to schedule the competency assessment, one a week out for the application.

Planning past renewal

If you expect to be in the field more than a couple of years, the renewal rhythm is also a good annual checkpoint for the bigger question: staying an RBT or climbing toward BCaBA or BCBA, where supervision flows the other direction.
