The RBT 40-Hour Training, Explained
The 40-hour training is the required first step toward RBT certification: a course covering the six Task List domains plus ethics, completed over at least a 5-day span. It is offered by employers, universities and online providers, ranges from free to about $100, and must follow the BACB's content outline to count.
What the training covers
The curriculum tracks the Task List: measurement procedures, assessment support, skill acquisition technology like DTT and prompting, behavior reduction principles, documentation standards, professional conduct, and the ethics requirements for RBTs. Good courses mix video instruction with quizzes and applied examples; the best ones make you practice data collection rather than just watch it.
Choosing a provider
- Employer-provided first: if an ABA company will hire you as a trainee, their training is free, tailored to their clients, and usually paired with the competency assessment and supervision you will need next. This is the shortest path.
- Confirm the 40-hour outline: legitimate courses state they meet the BACB's training requirements and cover the current Task List edition. If a provider is vague about this, move on.
- Ignore price as a quality signal: free and cheap courses from established ABA organizations routinely match $100 courses. What varies is production quality, not the requirement being met.
- Check the pacing rules: the training must span at least 5 days, so plan around that floor rather than expecting a weekend finish.
Getting the most out of it
Treat the training as your first study pass, not a box to tick. Take notes in your own words per domain, and after each module, run the matching domain quiz here while the material is fresh: the combination of instruction plus immediate testing is what makes it stick. Keep the glossary open for terms the videos rush past.
After the training
The sequence continues: competency assessment with a qualified assessor, BACB application with background check, then the exam. The full path with timelines is in how to become an RBT, and when you are ready to study seriously, start the 2-week or 4-week study plan.
